How We Selected the Best Jeans for Women

To find the best jeans for women on the market, we assessed several different factors and design elements of every pair of women’s jeans on this list: fit, rise, style, materials used, personal testing, and market research. To narrow our selections of the best jeans for women, we looked to online consumer reviews and interviewed denim experts in the fashion industry, including design directors, stylists, and denim brand founders. Additionally, we looked for jeans that were best for a variety of body types — from petite to tall to curvy and plus-size. You’ll find a price range that stems from affordable, budget-friendly finds from brands like Levi’s and Abercrombie, to premium denim brands like Frame and Agolde that have become tried-and-true favorites in the space.

Agolde ‘90s Pinch Waist Jeans

Best Straight-Leg Jeans for Women

  • Sizes: 23-34
  • Colors: Available in 10 denim washes
  • Pro: Versatile, everyday cut with flattering, easy-to-style high-waist
  • Con: Some say they run large, so may need to size down

Agolde has very quickly become a staple denim brand for fashion insiders and celebs alike — spotted on everyone from Hailey Bieber to Katie Holmes. “One of our most beloved styles season after season is the 90’s Pinch Waist,” Meehan shares. “To me, it’s the perfect vintage-inspired jean with a real throwback feel. It has this pinched-in top block and an easy straight leg that makes it so wearable yet flattering. It’s been so incredible and inspiring seeing so many women from all over the world wearing this universal fit and styling in their own individual way!” If you’re looking for that quintessential ‘90s model off-duty jean, this high-waisted straight leg style is a winner — and one you’ll wear for years to come.

What Reviewers Say: “I love these pants! so flattering & comfy. how I wish vintage Levis fit me. received many compliments. definitely ordering in additional washes.”

Testing Notes: While some reviewers say they needed to size down in the ‘90s Pinch Waist Jeans, I actually sized up in my pair, as someone with larger hips and thighs (note these are a more rigid, non-stretch denim).

Everlane The Curvy 90s Cheeky Jeans

Best Jeans for Curvy Women

  • Sizes: 23-33, available in 26.5 and 28.5 inseam options
  • Colors: Available in four denim washes
  • Pro: Curvy fit designed for hourglass shapes
  • Con: Some reviewers say runs small, size up

Everlane took their bestselling 90s Cheeky Jeans and reimagined them in a Curvy style designed specifically for hourglass shapes. This denim fit is meant to mold to those whose hips and thighs are fuller than their waistline. As a disclaimer: even though they are designed with curves in mind, the denim is completely non-stretch — so you may still want to size up when buying for a more comfortable fit. Many reviewers love these for the rigid vintage-inspired denim look and feel that doesn’t leave a gap in the waist. But several also noted that due to the lack of stretch, they needed to size up.

What Reviewers Say: “Will probably exclusively buy Everlane curvy jeans from now on. This is the first pair of jeans I have ever owned that are not jegging-like material that fit both my waist and my hips. Even other curvy brands still leave major gaps in the waist for me any time they fit my butt and hips, but not these. For that reason, they are incredibly flattering and have that nice, thick, tight in the right places but not all over look I have been trying to find for years. These pants are definitely a vintage no stretch type material which is different from what I’m used to, but I personally love it.”

Testing Notes: This no stretch denim means you should probably size up if you don’t want too tight of a fit!

Frame Le Baggy Palazzon Jeans

Best Loose Women’s Low-Rise Jeans

  • Sizes: 23-34
  • Colors: Available in six denim washed, including white and black
  • Pro: Oversized, baggy silhouette that’s comfortable but still looks refined
  • Con: Some may not like the low-rise waist

The low-rise, loose jeans of the early 2000s are back. This Frame pair does a perfect job of balancing the laidback, baggy Y2K nostalgia with design details that still keep the jeans looking polished. The curved seams and wide-leg cut balance out the low-rise waistband that sits at the hip bones. Since these are designed as an oversized pair of jeans, the brand recommends sizing down if you prefer a more fitted look.

What Reviewers Say: “Love them! I’m 5’3 130. I bought a 26. They fit perfectly but are a bit long. I wear them with a platform shoe and the look and feel GREAT! They bring me back to my younger years. By the way I’m 60!!!”

Best Dark Wash Jeans for Women

  • Sizes: 23-32
  • Colors: Available in black and mid-blue denim washes
  • Pro: Slightly stretchy denim is comfortable while still holding you in
  • Con: Cropped length may be harder to style with certain boots

After popping up on countless Fall 2022 runways, dark blue and black wash jeans are one of the season’s top denim trends to note. Easy for dressing up or down, black jeans have an added styling versatility that can take them from casual weekend plans to the office. Mother’s Tomcat Jeans feature a faded black denim wash that’s easy to style all year-round — but especially during the cool fall and winter months. Good American Always Fits Good Classic Jeans

Best Women’s Stretch Jeans

  • Sizes: 00-32
  • Special Features: Limitless four-way stretch and recovery denim that fits up to four sizes
  • Pro: Super comfortable stretch in an expansive size range
  • Con: Some reviewers complain the vast size range (one size fits four sizes) doesn’t give them their best fit

Good American has been a favorite for size-inclusive jeans since first popping up on the market. The brand’s ‘Always Fits’ denim range is one of its most-loved, featuring four-way stretch technology and recovery denim that’s designed to fit up to four sizes in one. A hybrid of skinny and straight-leg jeans, this high-rise style is universally flattering and designed to elongate the legs. Reviewers love the gap-proof waistband and ultra-comfy denim that molds to their body. But some note that the sizing chart may be difficult to find your perfect tailored fit for some of those in-between sizes.

What Reviewers Say: “So soft, stretchy, moves with your body, doesn’t dig into your waist. I loved my first pair so much, I ordered 5 more!”

Testing Notes: As someone with thicker thighs, I usually opt for Good American’s “Good Curve” line when buying denim from the brand. The stretch is ideal for fitting my hips and thighs without gapping at the waist, which is always something I struggle with when shopping for jeans. If you’re someone who likes a little stretch in your jeans, I think the Always Fits collection is the most comfortable—it truly doesn’t even feel like you’re wearing jeans.

Banana Republic The Loose Jeans

Best Women’s Mid-Rise Jeans

  • Sizes: 24-35
  • Special Features: 100% organic cotton, no stretch
  • Pro: Trendy wash, vintage feel
  • Con: Some may not like the non-stretch denim

So you want to get in on the loose jeans trend, but you’re not interested in the early 2000s-ification of it? Enter: Banana Republic’s Loose Jeans. Offering a mid-rise silhouette, so you don’t have to venture into low-rise territory, the brand’s take on slightly oversized denim is comfortable without sacrificing any polish. The slouchy, straight-leg style is made of 100% organic cotton for non-stretch denim that has a vintage look to it. If you prefer a high-rise fit, the brand recommends going one size down.

What Reviewers Say: “This pair of jeans is exactly what I was looking for! The denim is soft and not super stiff. If you follow their sizing suggestions you won’t have an issue. I originally picked my normal size and it was too tight, especially on the thighs/hips. I went one size up and opted for the longer length and they are perfect. The original size barely touched the floor. I have an hourglass shape so there is some room at the waist, but nothing I’m not comfortable with.”

Madewell The Perfect Vintage Jean

Best Mom Jeans

  • Sizes: Available in petite, standard, and tall lengths, in sizes 23-33
  • Colorways: Available in a range of denim washes
  • Pro: Available in petite, standard, and tall sizes; vintage look with a very slight stretch for added comfort
  • Con: Some reviews say they run large and you may have to size down

One of the brand’s bestsellers, The Perfect Vintage Jean, offers size accommodations in all categories and a range of denim washes for every style. These high-waisted jeans are designed to accentuate your waist in a slightly slouchy, straight leg silhouette. The raw hemline offers an effortlessly cool look when paired with boots or heels. With a 4.5 star rating to boast, many reviewers love these for their vintage-like look and feel that still offers a very slight stretch. “They have a nice rigid feel to the denim (not a super thin feel the way some are) with just enough stretch for there to be no waist gap and to perfectly hug the booty and thighs,” one reviewer says.

What Reviewers Say: “I hopped on the vintage denim train a while ago and for some reason gave away all my nice stretchy jeans. Don’t get me wrong, I love my vintage jeans, but it’s all fun and games until you are trying to eat a big meal sitting down in jeans with an 11 inch rise and NO give whatsoever! That sent me on a search for jeans that looked like my favorite pair but had just a tiny bit of stretch. It took me a while as I tried on many that weren’t quiiiiite right. Enter the perfect vintage jean. That flattering vintage style with enough give that I can actually move around and eat a meal. The Ainsworth wash is especially great as they have that broken in look right off the shelf. The leg is slim, not skinny, not stovepipe. I’m 5’4” and bought the petite inseam so they graze just above my ankle bone. Nice job Madewell, would definitely recommend these to anyone!!”

Abercrombie & Fitch Curve Love ‘90s Straight Leg Jeans

Best Petite Jeans

  • Sizes: 23-37; extra short, short, regular, long, extra long lengths
  • Colorways: Available in 10 washes, including white, black, blue, and distressed denim styles
  • Pro: Available in five different length options: Extra Short, Short, Regular, Long, and Extra Long
  • Con: Some reviews wish they had slightly more stretch

Hi, I am a person who will not shut up about the incredible transformation of Abercrombie’s jeans — I am truly obsessed. Known for its limited size range in the early aughts, the retailer now offers a variety of sizes from 23-37 in the waist, along with a curve-friendly line. What’s even better is that they offer extra short (below 5’0) and short (for those 5’0 – 5’3) length options, which are amazing for petite people who don’t have the patience to go and get their jeans hemmed (hello, it’s me). This high-waisted style offers the look and feel of structured, rigid denim with just the right amount of stretch to keep you comfortable. And with no hemming needed, it’s no surprise the brand’s Extra Short and Short jeans have taken over #PetiteTok — yes, that’s a thing.

What Reviewers Say: “I love these jeans. The fabric feels durable and high quality. The tall length is long enough on me and the curve love style fits my hips and waist well. My only concern is that I wish they had a little bit more stretch to the fabric. In certain sitting positions they feel a little restrictive.”

Testing Notes: As a petite with curves, Abercrombie’s Curve Love line is one of the only I don’t have to have hemmed or altered thanks to the Extra Short and Short length options.

  • Colorways: Available in 6 washes, including white, black, and a range of blues
  • Pro: Made with organic cotton and chemical-free stretch yarn that has no toxins or micro plastic dyes
  • Con: Some reviewers had fit issues and had to size up or down

Everlane’s Original Cheeky Jeans are a top-seller for several reasons. The high-rise, straight-leg style features a raised back-hook seam that’s designed to lift and tighten. Aside from the incredibly flattering and easy-to-style fit, the denim is the brand’s most eco-friendly to date, made with organic cotton, Roica® V550 yarn (a stretch yarn that isn’t made with harmful chemicals), microplastic-free dyes, and recycled trim. Some reviewers recommend sizing down, with one writing, “I love the feel of the real denim with just the tiny bit of stretch! They are a little loose on me, so may run a tad big. I wanted looser jeans this time so I am keeping them, but will likely opt for a size smaller next time.”

What Reviewers Say: “These jeans are still the best fit I’ve been able to find for my body and it’s my second pair. I generally despise hard pants, but these are the only ones I can manage to stay in all day. Most pants squeeze my thighs/calves, and leave a waist gap – but these don’t!”

Good American Good ‘90s Loose Jeans

Best Baggy Jeans

  • Sizes: 00-32
  • Colorways: Light blue denim wash
  • Pro: Oversized fit still gives that loose look to those with curvy hips and thighs
  • Con: The fit was too oversized for some

Ultra-loose, baggy jeans from the ‘90s are another denim trend staging a comeback. Good American’s iteration delivers on the vintage-inspired look with an oversized, baggy silhouette that is super laidback with a dash of cool. Made of 100% cotton, the non-stretch baggy jeans give you that authentic ‘90s look with a comfortable feel. Pair them with a tee and sneakers, or contrast the style with a pair of heels for an unexpected combo.

What Reviewers Say: “These don’t run that big in my opinion for those of us with larger hips and thighs. I think if you’re in between sizes you could size down for sure but your reg size would work too if you’ve got a larger bottom area. I think they fit how they should. Finally loose jeans that are flattering and baggy enough on the thighs and small enough but not too tight on the waist. They sit right below the belly button on me. I got a 12 as well and those have a more slouchy low rider fit and I was going to return it but I kinda like the look. I feel like tossing all my other baggy jeans because these fit the best.”

I will say they look a little like mom jeans around the tummy area, but they make your butt look amazing.” This style is also available in a range of eight different washes — from a less traditional peach denim to a cool gray to a minimal oat hue.

What Reviewers Say: “The high waist and flair create a very flattering profile. I’ve received tons of compliments. I did order according to the measurement size guide and not according to my normal size. I usually wear a 28 short but the 30 short fits perfectly.”

Trendy Women’s Jeans: Jean Trends 2022

Yes, straight-leg and high-waisted jeans are still going strong, but there are some rising new denim trends taking over for Fall 2022 too. Most notable? The Y2K resurgence, which has come for just about every inch of the fashion industry, is now delivering a slew of vintage jean trends this season. From ultra baggy, low-rise jeans to oversized cargo styles, loose-fitting denim is reigning supreme this season. Designers like Tibi, Isabel Marant, and Khaite explored those baggy denim looks on the Fall 2022 runways, and style setters from Bella Hadid to Hailey Bieber have already been experimenting with the low-rise, loose-fitting jean styles IRL.

But, don’t worry, if you prefer a more polished, less early 2000s look. This fall’s denim market is full of flares, wide-leg jeans, boot-cut styles, and barrel jeans to choose from and will still give you all the comfort and ease of loose-fitting jeans — minus the Y2K flashbacks.

“There’s been such an evolution lately, especially when it comes to the rise of a jean,” Erin Meehan, Design Director at Agolde says. “Right now, it’s all about the baggier, lower-slung style jeans! While high rises are still so flattering and relevant, we’re seeing low rises on the uptrend.”

And for those who prefer the more streamlined classics, the ’90s mom jean is still going strong — with plenty of vintage, straight-leg styles from brands like Agolde and Madewell. So no matter which fit or decade of aesthetics you prefer, there’s guaranteed to be a new jean trend for you to try this season.

The Different Types of Women’s Jeans

  • Straight-Leg Jeans: If you’re looking for that streamlined, vintage-inspired pair of ‘90s jeans, a straight-leg style is your best route. Designed to fit straight down your leg without clinging as close to your body as skinny jeans, this style is versatile for any occasion. As a bonus, many straight leg options are some of the best jeans for curvy women. Add a t-shirt and blazer for the office, pair them with heels for a night out, or make them casual with a pair of sneakers for the weekend. If you’re going to invest in one pair of jeans, a straight-leg style is essential for every wardrobe.
  • Skinny Jeans: Despite Gen Z’s best efforts to banish this design, the skinny jean is still here to stay. A denim staple, skinny jeans are flattering on all body types, as they’re designed to sculpt and mold to your body’s natural shape. Ideal for tucking into boots and pairing with flats or heels, skinny jeans are a no-fuss denim silhouette that’s easy to dress up or down.
  • Wide-Leg Jeans: If you prefer a denim style with more movement, wide-leg jeans are the way to go. Ideal for a more polished look, wide-leg jeans are perfect for the office or dressier occasions as they lend a more glam look, especially when styled with heels or boots.
  • Flared Jeans: The difference between flared and wide-leg jeans is that flares are designed to be fitted throughout the hips and thigh and then flare out at the knee. Made popular in the ‘70s, this silhouette is particularly flattering for those who want to elongate their legs. They can be paired with heels or platform boots for a more elevated look, or styled with sneakers for a laidback vibe.
  • Baggy Jeans: Boyfriend jeans are loved for their loose, more laidback silhouette — but the rising ‘90s-inspired baggy jeans trend is taking that look up a notch. Ultra-loose and baggy, these jeans are perfect for those who want to keep things more casual and comfortable for those who don’t like the feel of tight-fitting denim. Style them with sneakers and an oversized tee for the true ‘90s look or dress them up with heels to put a spin on things for a night out.

What to Consider When Shopping for the Best Jeans for Women

  • Fit: The key to finding the best jeans for you is getting the fit and size just right. And with most denim brands using different sizing scales, it can be incredibly difficult to determine your true size. “The common misconception about jeans is that the waist size (25, 26, 27) means that is the size waist you are — sizes are completely arbitrary and that is why to ensure the perfect fit, you must know your measurements,” Lindsey Davidson, CEO and Founder of Lenny, says. To do so, the vintage denim expert recommends knowing three key measurements before you buy a pair of jeans:
  • Waist: “Determine the measurement of your natural waistline (above the belly button), the smallest part of your waist and torso.”
  • Under the belly button: “Knowing that measurement will ensure that any jeans with an inseam of 9-11” will fit properly.”
  • Low hips/butt: “This is probably the most important measurement because it indicates how the jean will lay on your butt, ensuring a different fit based on preference.”
  • Rise: There are three general denim rises to choose from: high-rise, mid-rise, and low-rise. High-rise jeans hit above your belly button, mid-rise jeans sit at your natural waist, and low-rise jeans hit below the belly button at your hip bone. “A jean’s rises and inseam lengths are important factors for individuals trying to achieve a certain shape,” Meehan says, “For example, if you are hoping to elongate your torso and height, I’d recommend a higher rise, full-length jean, and pairing it with a heel.” If you’re looking for a jean you’d like to tuck your tops into, a high or mid-rise is your best bet. If you’re looking for something more casual and trendy, the current low-rise jeans renaissance is a fun way to try a new denim look.
  • Fabric: Most jeans are made from cotton, but there are two main styles of denim: stretch and non-stretch (also called rigid, stiff, or structured). If a pair of jeans have any percentage of elastane, spandex, or lycra in the fabric contents, they have some stretch to it. “Structured denim pieces are 100% cotton, which means they will stretch out with wear, but are not ‘stretch’ jeans. Stretch denim has elastane keeping the general shape throughout,” Davidson says. The higher the percentage of spandex or elastane, the more stretch a pair of jeans will have, which is why it’s so important to look at the fabric contents before buying a pair of jeans. If you’re looking for a more vintage-inspired, rigid denim style, look for a style made of 100% cotton. If you prefer your jeans to have some stretch to them for more comfort, reach for a pair that’s made with spandex or elastane. Typically, stretch jeans tend to mold to your body a little snugger without sacrificing comfort. It all comes down to personal preference.

Most Flattering Jeans for Different Body Types

The best jeans for your body type all depends on the fit, rise, and styles you prefer the most. But if you’re looking for a little more guidance on your quest to find the perfect denim, keep some of these tips in mind:

  • Most flattering jeans for women overall: For reliable, no-fuss denim styles, straight-leg and skinny jeans tend to be universally flattering jeans for all body types. When it comes to the rise of your denim, a high-waisted rise similarly lends itself to a complimentary look for every size and shape.
  • For petite sizes: If you want to elongate your legs or appear taller, opt for flared or wide-leg silhouettes. And if you want something you won’t have to get hemmed, look at brands like Madewell and Abercrombie & Fitch that offer petite jean sizing.
  • For tall sizes: Similarly, if you’re taller, go for brands that have a size range that spans to tall sizes (Madewell also offers Tall sizes in denim). Typically, straight-leg or skinny jeans tend to be the most flattering denim silhouettes on taller women.
  • For pear and hourglass shapes: If you’re someone who has a curvy or hourglass shape, look for high-rise jeans that will accentuate your waist. Flared jeans or wide-leg jeans are typically flattering when it comes to playing with your proportions. Brands like Good American and Everlane have curve-friendly denim styles designed specifically for these body types with gap-proof waistbands.
  • For athletic shapes: Boyfriend and straight-leg jeans tend to be universally flattering, but especially on those with more athletic body types. Likewise, a high-rise waistband helps create more shape within the waist and hips.

The Best Places to Buy Women’s Jeans

Shopping for womens jeans is never easy, especially when it comes to ordering them online. If you’re looking for more fashion-forward denim styles, Net-A-Porter, FWRD, Nordstrom, and Farfetch typically have a wide variety of women’s denim brands and styles to choose from. In terms of finding plus-size and curve-friendly jeans, retailers like Dia, Universal Standard, and Good American offer a robust selection of sizes and virtual try-ons that make it easier to shop online — plus they show a range of different-sized models to get a better idea of look and fit for your body type. Retailers like Amazon, Nordstrom, and Saks offer easy return policies that make it less stressful to order multiple sizes and send back what doesn’t fit. Plus, they have a whole swath of denim brands for women to shop — from budget-friendly Levi’s to designer denim, so you can try multiple brands and denim styles at once.

The Best Way to Wash Denim Jeans and How Often Should You Wash Them

Denim is a durable fabric that doesn’t have to be washed after each wear, with many brands like Levi’s suggesting you wash your jeans every 10 wears. Most women’s jeans can be machine-washed, but make sure you follow the instructions on your jeans’ care label, as some may need to be washed in certain temperatures of water or turned inside out to preserve dyes and shape. If you’re looking to clean your jeans without putting them through the washing machine, most denim can be placed in the freezer to get rid of bacteria without compromising the shape in the wash. While some jeans can go through the dryer, letting them hang dry can help avoid any potential shrinkage.
