Kate Middleton Wants to Get Her Kids “Practical Gifts” to Help Limit Their Screen Time
There’s a very good chance Prince George and Princess Charlotte won’t get everything on their Christmas lists this year, apparently. Why? Because the olds in their lives are worried they have “too much screen time,” apparently.
Prince William and Kate Middleton and are “thinking more carefully” about the gifts they buy for their kids this year and will be steering clear of anything “extravagant,” according to royal expert Katie Nicholl (per the Daily Mail).
According to Nicholl, the royal kids—especially seven-year-old George and six-year-old Charlotte—are, like pretty much every other kid fortunate enough to have access to technology, gadgets, and the internet, big fans of all of the above. Unfortunately for their potentially tech-heavy Christmas lists, however, their parents are strict about screen time. In fact, according to the Daily Mail, Kate has been said to be “very strict on screen time” and reportedly “won’t allow Prince George, Princess Charlotte or Prince Louis their own devices.”
“George enjoys his iPad at school, both he and Charlotte are quite tech-savvy and, like most children, there probably are technical gadgets and such like on their wish list,” Nicholl explained. “If it is something that happens to be a computer game or something like that then they are cautious of screen time so it could be a more practical gift.”
So what kinds of gifts are the royal kiddos likely to find under the tree? According to Nicholl, they should expect things that can be “used outdoors” or that will “last forever” (which we would love to imagine means something like priceless royal jewels/heirlooms, except that would obviously mean ignoring the already-established prohibition on “extravagant” gifts).
“Kate is usually very strict on screen time and keeps it to a minimum,” Nicholl said. “[The Cambridge family has] got climbing frames, swings and a pond, and each of the children are in charge of their own little patch of the kitchen garden.”
While our hearts go out to George, Charlotte, and even Louis if they feel any pangs of disappointment when it’s time to open their holiday gifts, FWIW, Will and Kate are actually making a really valid and scientifically-backed parenting choice (both WHO and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend limiting screen time for kids). So, hopefully the Cambridge kids will thank their parents for all the outdoorsy and forever gifts later, even if they’re a little bummed about them now.
