The Closer. “Critics in the LGBTQ community implicate him of misogyny and of slamming transgender people. Among remarks that attracted controversy, Chappelle stated, “Gender is a fact. Every human remaining in this room, every human being on Earth, had to go through the legs of a female to be on Earth. That is a truth.”

According to Forbes, Chappelle was “roundly criticized by advocacy groups including GLAAD, the Human Rights Project and the National Black Justice Coalition.” The NBJC issued a declaration: “With 2021 on track to be the deadliest year on record for transgender individuals in the United States– most of whom are Black transgender individuals– Netflix must know better.”

A Newsweek headline read: “Netflix’s Defense of Dave Chappelle Stirs Hope on the Right of End of ‘Cancel Age.'” And New York Post movie critic Kyle Smith wrote: “Netflix this week has supplied the rest of the culture with a basic example of what to do when the woke mob comes requiring human sacrifice and ritualized electronic humiliation: Simply say, ‘Nah.'”

Netflix initially waited Chappelle and supposedly suspended three annoyed workers for intruding, unwanted, into a virtual conference where executives went over how to react to critics.

At the time, Netflix co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, stated, “While some staff members disagree, we have a strong belief that content onscreen doesn’t straight translate to real-world damage … Adults can view violence, attack and abuse– or take pleasure in stunning stand-up comedy– without it causing them to hurt others.”

And Netflix’s other co-CEO Reed Hastings stated, “I do think that our commitment to artistic expression and pleasing our members is the ideal long-lasting choice for Netflix.” And Hastings likewise pointed out that the special got a high rating from its audience on the rating website Rotten Tomatoes.

Hold the appreciation.

As to Hastings’ defense of the Chappelle special due to its high audience ranking, consider this. “Uncle Tom,” the movie I executive produced that was directed by Justin Malone, had the exact very same Rotten Tomatoes approval ranking, 96%, as did “The Closer.” However, in spite of our best shots, Netflix declined to carry it. Amazon Prime and iTunes consented to make the documentary offered to their users, but not Netflix.

Likewise, Netflix is greatly purchased the extremely popular Chappelle. The entertainment company signed him to an equally fulfilling long-lasting offer. It wanted to safeguard its financial investment.

More significantly, while it took a few days, Netflix strolled back its ringing defense of creative flexibility. In an interview just days after his e-mail defending Chappelle, Sarandos said he “screwed up”: “What I must have led with in those emails was humankind. I need to have acknowledged the fact that a group of our staff members was actually harming … To be clear, storytelling has an impact in the real life … often rather unfavorable.”

Sarandos does not intend to get rid of the funny special: “We have articulated to our staff members that there are going to be things you do not like … There are going to be things that you might feel are hazardous. However we are attempting to amuse a world with differing tastes and perceptiveness and various beliefs, and I believe this unique followed that.”

Should conservatives applaud a home entertainment platform that refused to bring a “conservative” documentary with the exact same high score as “The Closer”? Had Netflix expected the negative left-wing criticism leveled at Chappelle’s special, would they have aired it as is?

Chappelle, in a public look right after the controversy, stated: “If this is what being canceled resembles, I like it … F– Twitter. F– NBC News, ABC News, all these stupid-ass networks. I’m not talking to them. I’m speaking with you. This is real life.” Netflix says it intends to continue its relationship with Chappelle. Time will tell. This will be a test for Netflix and for Chappelle.

However when conservatives anticipate Netflix to stand up to cancel culture, the winner is cancel culture.
