Pfizer and BioNTech are expected to demand approval from the Food and Drug Administration to administer COVID-19 booster shots to Americans ages 16 and 17, multiple outlets reported on Monday.

While booster shots for all coronavirus vaccines are licensed for anyone ages 18 and up, the FDA has licensed just the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for Americans younger than 18. Pfizer and BioNTech will look for permission for booster shots for 16- and 17-year-olds and they think that regulators will authorize the request rapidly, according to the Washington Post.

The FDA licensed Pfizer and Moderna boosters for all adults in mid November. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its suggestions for booster shots on Monday, saying that adult Americans “ought to” get a booster, when the firm previously said grownups at lower threat of COVID-19 “may” get one.

The news comes in the middle of the development of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, which the World Health Organization categorized as an alternative “of concern.” Health authorities in the U.S. have cautioned that it will take several weeks of research study to identify whether the variation can evade security provided by vaccines.

” I do not believe it is most likely that there will be no protection from these vaccines against Omicron, however we may see subsiding of it,” Paul Burton, the primary medical officer at Moderna, informed NBC on Monday.

” If you talk with individuals in vaccine circles, people who are dealing with a vaccine, they have a pretty great degree of confidence that an enhanced vaccine, so 3 complete dosages of vaccine, is going to be fairly protective against this brand-new version,” Scott Gottlieb, previous commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, stated on CBS on Sunday.
