Queen Elizabeth II has died, the Buckingham Palace has confirmed. The monarch was 96 years old.

She is survived by her four children—Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, Princess Anne, Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, and Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex—as well as eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A service for the queen will take place on date to be announced.

The queen will be succeeded by her eldest son and heir, Prince Charles, who will become the King of England. His coronation ceremony will take place on a date to be announced.

On September 8, 2022, Buckingham Palace released a statement to the press noting that the Queen’s doctors were “concerned for her health.” She remained under medical supervision until her passing at Balmoral Castle, where she spent the last days of her life.

The Queen had kept a low profile since contracting COVID-19 in February 2021. On a Zoom call in early April 2022, she mentioned that she had been feeling “exhausted” since her recovery. She also missed the Easter celebration at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on April 17, 2022. She has made a few appearances in public in 2022, the first on March 29 at the memorial service for her husband, Prince Philip, who died in April 2021, just shy of his 100th birthday.

After attending the Trooping the Colour Parade on June 2, she pulled out of another Platinum Jubilee celebration, citing “some discomfort.” The Platinum Jubilee marked the Queen’s 70th year on the British throne.

The Queen’s grandson, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, visited the monarch at her home in April of 2022, stopping by on their way to the Invictus Games in The Hague, Netherlands. The Queen was able to meet her granddaughter, Lilibet Diana, and visit with her grandson, Archie, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June. The couple also visited her at Balmoral Castle before she passed.
