Prosecutors asked a Texas jury Wednesday to consider the death penalty for Taylor Rene Parker, who was found guilty last week of murdering a pregnant woman and cutting her unborn baby from her body.

Parker, 29, was convicted of capital murder on Oct. 3 in the gruesome killing of Reagan Michelle Simmons-Hancock, 21, and her infant daughter in New Boston in Oct. 2020.

The verdict, reached in under an hour by a jury of six women and six men, came after three weeks of graphic testimony about how Parker crushed Simmons-Hancock’s skull with a hammer and stabbed her more than 100 times before removing her baby from her womb with a scalpel.

The infant was abducted by Parker, and later died.

Prosecutor Kelley Crisp told the jury that Parker, who could not conceive after a hysterectomy, conspired to kill Simmons-Hancock and kidnap her child in order to keep her boyfriend.

Parker allegedly faked a pregnancy for almost 10 months, even hosting a gender reveal party and posting about her pretend baby on social media while searching for a potential victim.

Internet search history from the day of the murder also suggested that Parker watched several YouTube videos on delivering pre-term babies at just under 8 months gestation. Simmons-Hancock was 35 weeks pregnant at the time of the attack.

“She’s a liar, a manipulator, and now she’s gonna be held accountable for it,” Assistant District Attorney Lauren Richards said in her closing statement.

At the end of the sentencing trial that began Wednesday, the jury is expected to determine whether Parker will receive life imprisonment without parole or a death sentence.

Defense attorney Jeff Harrelson said Wednesday that he intends to show that Parker is mentally ill.

Both Harrelson and the Bowie County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
