The Marvels Already Avoids A Recent MCU Movie Trend

The Marvels will not be a traditional Captain Marvel sequel but rather a team-up film, and that avoids an MCU Phase 4 solo movie problem.

The Marvels will see Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan teaming up for the first time, and the fact the movie is being treated as a crossover event rather than an actual Captain Marvel sequel breaks a recent MCU movie trend. More than three years after the events of Avengers: Endgame, audiences only got to see Captain Marvel in the post-credits scenes for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Ms. Marvel, the latter of which directly set up The Marvels. With Monica Rambeau now having powers after her interaction with Scarlet Witch’s energy field and Carol Danvers having some sort of connection to Kamala Khan, the MCU is ready for its next crossover event.

However, one major difference between The Marvels and recent MCU team-up movies is that the former is not being treated as a “simple” Captain Marvel solo movie sequel. Instead, Marvel is making clear that The Marvels is a crossover event as shown by the title of the movie. While that may seem like a small detail, such a clear distinction avoids a common problem Marvel’s Phases 3 and 4 had – movies that were supposed to be solo stories but were actually team-up films. Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are examples of MCU movie sequels in which the titular hero was often sidelined in favor of expanding the universes.

Recent Solo Marvel Films Have Been Secretly Crossover Events

With the Avengers films proving that crossover events and team-up films usually lead to strong box-office performances, it was no surprise that solo adventures became less common in the MCU. Whereas Marvel’s Phase 1 was built on solo stories like Iron Man (2008), it was going to be difficult to ask audiences to expect anything less than the Battle of New York or the Battle of Earth after the Avengers movies. The MCU could not simply make several Avengers films in each phase, which is why crossovers like Team Iron Man and Team Cap in Civil War or Thor and Hulk in Ragnarok became so common. That level of expectations became even higher after Avengers: Endgame, thus leading to “mini Avengers movies” such as Multiverse of Madness.

The Marvels Makes It Clear It Is A Team-Up Movie

Having several event movies before the Avengers ones is not a problem. In fact, with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty happening six years after Endgame, those team-up movies are among the most exciting MCU releases for the Multiverse Saga. The problem, however, is when a film like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is promoted as the second chapter in Doctor Strange’s story but ends up being a crossover event that tries to tie WandaVision, What If…?, Loki, and future Fantastic Four and X-Men projects into a two-hour film. The Marvels is set to avoid that problem, as it is being promoted from the beginning as a story about Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan.

The fact that The Marvels is not called “Captain Marvel 2” or anything similar also means that a more Carol Danvers-centered sequel can happen at some point, just like solo Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan movies could happen in the future as well. The MCU has grown large enough not to depend on solo films only, meaning that movies in the style of The Marvels could become even more common. Essentially, having the first crossover of Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel as a movie of its own is better than trying to balance a solo story with several cameos and team-ups like Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness did.
