What to Watch the Week of September 4: Hulu’s ‘Tell Me Lies,’ Showtime’s ‘American Gigolo,’ and Netflix’s ‘Cobra Kai’

If you’re staying in town this Labor Day weekend and looking for new shows to watch and movies to see, then you’re in luck, because the onslaught of fall programming is here and it’s a lot. It’s also just the beginning: The main broadcast networks have yet to premiere their new and returning shows, so consider this your warm-up.

Acorn TV, the subscription video streaming service that offers programming from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland, among many others, debuts the new series Recipes for Love and Murder, which is a good ol’ mystery series with Instagram-worthy food and Hallmark-style small-town vibes.

This Tuesday you can finally watch the charming Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris on digital or DVD, in case you didn’t get around to seeing it in the theater. It’s one of my favorite movies of the year—a truly sweet film with a heartwarming message and stunning vintage Dior dresses. Watch it.

What else? Well, there’s a new pizza competition series on Netflix that’s bound to make you hungry. Hulu debuts Tell Me Lies, a dark and sexy drama series. Christine Baranski says goodbye to playing Diane Lockhart on The Good Fight. Jon Bernthal steams up the screen with Showtime’s American Gigolo, and Cobra Kai returns for season five on Netflix. And that’s only half of it.

Check out everything below, and I’ll see you back here next week for your guide to the returning (hi, Drew!)—and new (hi, J.Hud!)—daytime talk shows, the Emmys on NBC, and Fox’s country music drama, Monarch. Now, if only we could get some cooler temps to go with it.

Monday, September 5

Recipes for Love and Murder (Acorn TV): If the title of this new mystery series hasn’t intrigued you, then let me try this angle: What if Julia Child and Agatha Christie were the same person? That’s what you get with Recipes for Love and Murder, a 10-episode series which stars Outlander fan favorite Maria Doyle Kennedy (Jocasta) in the lead role. Check out the captivating trailer below. First two episodes premiere tonight, and then stream weekly through Monday, October 3.
